Cape Addition
A quintessential part of the New England architectural landscape is the Cape Cod house. Born by Puritan colonists in the 17th century for its simplicity as a shelter, it has become an iconic part of our New England surroundings. Today’s lifestyle means that many capes you see will have additions, dormers and blends of complimentary local architecture to meet the modern need.
We wrote about this Newton project a few months ago when the project was nearing completion and a few months after the fact the couple seems to really be enjoying their new space as the homeowner remarked in a recent review on Houzz, ” The addition to our home is beautiful and looks like it was always part of the original house.”
The Owner contacted us and thought they would benefit from an addition over the garage to help with the challenge of a second floor master with inadequate closets adn overall square footage. Also driving the discussion was a remote laundry situation accessed by a 2 foot wide cellar staid, a basement media space with a poor connection to the home and the desire for a proper family entry.
After working with the family on objectives and concepts, we helped guide them on an addition that provided everything they wanted. The covered entry from the garage keeps the weather off the the family in the transition and allows everyone including guests to move freely to the backyard without closing it off. The second floor connection provides a laundry room, a connection from the main house and a second stair from the master for better ergonomics around the house.
Below are before and afters of the addition.
